The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
